A rare 1933 auction map detailing the early layout and development of the original Brookmans Park Estate has been found in the loft of the estate office hut on Bradmore Green.

The find provides a valuable snapshot of the village’s growth during its formative years and offers fresh insight into how Brookmans Park evolved in the years between the first sales brochure - published in 1926 - and the early 1930s.

Dated 1933, the map shows the road layout and housing plots that existed seven years after a promotional brochure first advertised plans for new homes in Brookmans Park.

The office hut has been home to various estate agents for around a century, those we know of include:
  • Alaway & Partners - 1926
  • Hobbs Homes / Neville Hobbs – 1970s (and possibly earlier)
  • Windsors Estate Agents – later 20th century
  • Fine & Country – most recent occupant of the hut
The map was discovered during an inspection of the hut’s roof space in January 2026.

What the 1933 map tells us

The newly discovered map reveals precisely what housing was already established at that time along the recently constructed roads of:
  • Bradmore Way
  • Brookmans Avenue
  • Bluebridge Road
  • The north side of the village end of Moffats Lane
  • Mymms Drive
  • Kentish Lane
  • The Great North Road
Notably absent from the 1933 map are Peplins Way, Calder Avenue, The Gardens, and Westland Drive - illustrating that these roads were developed later. This is confirmed by the 1935-1937 maps below:

Written prominently on the map are the words:

LAND AND RESIDENCES
BROOKMANS PARK
HERTS.
For Sale by Auction at
THE "RED LION HOTEL", HIGH BARNET,
Saturday, April 22nd, 1933,
at 3.30 p.m
BROOKMANS PARK
AND
20, BLOOMSBURY SQUARE,
LONDON, W.C.1

The reference to the Red Lion Hotel in High Barnet confirms that the auction of land and properties was held outside the parish itself, reflecting common practice at the time.

North Mymms Parish Council has granted permission for the North Mymms History Project to publish the map as part of our ongoing work to preserve and share the parish’s history for future generations.

Those interested in the development of Brookmans Park might also want to read Peter Kingsford’s book, ‘A Modern History of Brookmans Park 1700-1950’, which is published on this site. You might also want to read the October 2014 report Brookmans Park’s Changing Population and Housing, which examines how the village has evolved over the decades.
