Bell Bar was once an important staging post for those travelling north and south along the Great North Road with four inns and alehouses in the small hamlet. In the 1750s it was one of the busiest communities in North Mymms.
In 1987, local historian and author, Peter Kingsford, wrote a brief history of Bell Bar for the November issue of the Chancellor’s Community Newsletter, reproduced here with permission of the publisher.
