In 1988 PC Brian Hitchings retired as the local police officer having served the area for 23 of his 30 years with the force.

According to tributes paid in the Chancellor’s Community Newsletter at the time, PC Hitchings was ”the epitome of everyone’s idea of a village policeman as he rode around the district on his bicycle”.

The following three article have been reproduced with permission of the publisher .

The first is from the December 1984 issue and is a report by PC Hitchings about burglaries.

The second is from the November 1988 issue and contains tributes to PC Hitchings on his retirement from local residents including Jack Partington, Brian Coombe and Len Hull.

The third, also from the November 1988 issue, marked his retirement.  Click on the images below for larger versions.
